Class 3 - Low Activity Waste Pretreatment System (LAWPS) permit modification Part 2
We are holding a 45-day public comment period to support a requested Class 3 permit modification to the Hanford Dangerous Waste Permit. This modification would add a new operating unit for the Low Activity Waste Pretreatment System (LAWPS). This operating unit would pretreat (remove cesium and filter out solid particles) double-shell tank waste for subsequent vitrification in the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant Low-Activity Waste (LAW) Facility.
The LAWPS will be operated in phases, with LAWPS Phase One as a Tank Side Cesium Removal (TSCR) unit that will operate for about five years. The first phase of the LAWPS will include the dangerous waste management units: TSCR, Ion Exchange Column (IXC) Storage Pad, and the IXC Staging Area.
