2026 Business Organics Management Areas Map
The Washington State Department of Ecology is asking for public comments on the Draft 2026 Business Organics Management Areas (BOMA) map. This map shows the areas of the state where businesses will be required to collect food waste and other organic materials for composting or other processing during the 2026 calendar year.
Blue areas on the map show where business organics collection is already active in 2025 and where collection is proposed to expand in 2026. The only proposed collection area for 2026 is 98850, Rock Island in Douglas County, Washington
A Business Organics Management Area (BOMA) is a place where both of the following conditions are met:
Businesses have access to year-round curbside collection for food waste and organic materials.
The collected materials are sent to an organics management facility, such as a compost facility or anaerobic digester, and there is capacity at that facility to accept more material.
Ecology determines these areas by working with local governments, waste haulers, and composting facilities. We are also asking for public feedback on the draft map to make sure it reflects real-world conditions and needs.
